Screenshots get useful names. Automatically.
A tiny macOS menu-bar app that watches your screenshots folder and renames new captures using a vision model. Bring your own key. Free, open source, no servers in the loop.

Stop renaming things by hand.
Screenshot 2026-04-21 at 3.41.58 PM.png is useless six months later. Finch turns it into something you can actually search for — without you ever opening the file.
Menu-bar only
No dock clutter. Click the icon for the rename history, settings, or to pause. Stays out of the way until you need it.
Bring your own key
Routes through OpenRouter, so you can pick any vision model — gpt-4o-mini, Claude Haiku, Gemini Flash. Your key, your bill, stored in macOS Keychain.
No servers in the loop
Finch has no backend. The only network request is from your Mac to your model provider. We can't read your screenshots — we don't have anything to read them on.
Local OCR for context
Apple's Vision framework extracts on-screen text on-device first, so the model gets richer context with smaller payloads.
Optional Finder tags
Have Finch attach descriptive macOS tags so screenshots stay searchable in Finder long after the rename.
Safe by default
Sandboxed, signed, notarized. Won't recurse into subfolders. Won't rename the same file twice. Handles filename collisions automatically.
Three steps.
No setup wizard. No account. No telemetry.
Pick a folder
Click the menu bar icon, choose where macOS saves your screenshots. Usually ~/Desktop.
Add an OpenRouter key
Free tier works fine. Defaults to gpt-4o-mini — about a tenth of a cent per screenshot.
Take a screenshot
Cmd+Shift+4. Wait a beat. The filename changes. That's the entire UX.
Your screenshots stay yours.
Finch makes no network requests except to the model provider you choose. No telemetry, no cloud accounts, no analytics. Your OpenRouter key is stored in macOS Keychain on your Mac.
The only data leaving your machine is the screenshot itself — resized and JPEG-compressed below 1.5 MB — sent over HTTPS to whoever you pointed Finch at. Light Works the company has no backend; we receive nothing and store nothing.
Frequently asked
How much does it cost?
The app is free and open source. The AI calls use your own OpenRouter key — at gpt-4o-mini, roughly a tenth of a cent per screenshot. 100 screenshots a month is about ten cents.
Where do my screenshots go?
From your Mac, over HTTPS, directly to whichever model provider you point Finch at. Light Works has no servers in the loop and receives nothing. Each upstream provider has its own retention policy.
Why not Apple Intelligence / on-device?
Apple's Foundation Models API doesn't yet expose a vision-captioning path that's good enough for screenshots. There's an experimental local-MLX mode (Qwen2-VL on Apple Silicon) for fully-offline use, but the OpenRouter route is faster and better in v1.
Will it rename files I didn't take?
Only direct children of the folder you pick. Never recursive. Already-renamed files are skipped via a persistent index. Filename collisions are handled safely (name-2.png, name-3.png).
Is there a paid version?
Not yet. If demand justifies it we'll ship a Mac App Store version with a hosted backend so you don't need an OpenRouter account — same app, less setup, monthly subscription. The open-source BYOK build will stay free forever.
